Well that settles that!
These are the results of a poll I posted on the Kumoricon board.
http://www.kumoricon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4438&start=15

Which Kumoricon Hotel did you like the most?
Doubletree in Eugene (Springfield?), 2003 0% [ 0 ]
Marriott on the River, 2004 0% [ 0 ]
Doubletree next to Lloyd Center, 2005 60% [ 17 ]
Red Lion in Hayden Island, 2006 14% [ 4 ]
Hilton in downtown Vancouver, 2007 25% [ 7 ]

Total Votes : 28

Not to be biased, but a few of the votes for the Hilton were people who have only been to Kcon '06.
And oddly enough, we got four votes for the Red Lion and the closest thing to an explanation was "There's a grocery store nearby." The Safeway was two blocks away, which was very convenient, but that's all you can say in its defense?

I just wanted to post this here so that people could see exactly what the public opinion is.

And in other news... (lj cut of randoms stuff) )

Since I'm always pressed for time I'll go over the other theories of why Kumoricon is in a smaller hotel now.

The Second Theory is a little more twisted. They think we want it in smaller places. The numbers do show that a lot of us prefer an anime convention in a hotel rather than a convention that's in a convention center. Rather than just fighting to stay in the hotels we've liked in the past (that would be the Doubletree and.... the Doubletree) they think they'll do us one better by actually moving to smaller hotels with less square footage and fewer rooms. This is the same kind of logic grandparents use when they hear you like anime and get you a Pokemon book for 4th graders. We like the convenience of staying in the same building, not the cramped conditions of small hotels!

I'll go through the last few a bit quicker to make sure I get through them all.

Our relations department is involved in some sort of crazy collection game. They are trying to get the convention hosted at all of the big name hotels so that he can have a full set of "references" for his resume. We've been at the Marriott, the Doubletree (who owns them again?), Red Lion and the Hilton. This leaves what, the Holiday Inn? Shilo Inns are a local chain and they might be the final goal, what's more Northwest than Shilo Inns after all?

We're being sabotaged by a different convention, Orycon, Portland's long running science fiction convention. Orycon is bitter about the bad rap they've gotten in the fandom community as a den of iniquity. Known in some circles as "Whoreycon" and "Orgycon" they can't deal with another convention becoming more popular than they are, especially one organized by "kids" like us. So they've begun poisoning the well by spreading bad rumors about us anime geeks around Portland. The Orycon guys are grown ups and have boring mundane lives that put them in close contact with church groups, little leagues, wedding planners, charities and of course, Shriners. Using this web of influence they get large gatherings booked in the best hotels over Labor Day weekend and when they find what hotel we ARE staying at they attempt to sabotage us further by moving in whatever groups they can to hassle us at the convention itself. The wedding that took away Main Events? The niece of their head of publicity. The handicapable convention at the Marriott? Their Vice Chair was on the budget committee of that foundation. They've gone so far as to infiltrate our forums and staff with some of their "grown up" attendees. Choose your words carefully at those meetings friends.

Two Words. Dart Board.

The executive staff have no long term goal for Kumoricon itself and are moving to smaller and smaller locations until we finally get some deaths by trampling. After placing blame on whatever con chair they fix the elections to put in place , they will use the infamy of "Kill-moricon" to become high priced event planners. They admitted to part of this plan during a meeting last year, saying that you needed six years on your resume to get certification. This is Kumoricon's 5th year, could disaster be on the horizon?

Vallie also mentions that it could be the fault of the convention that runs out of Vancouver BC. We can never remember their name, but its never too late to BLAME CANADA.
